Swingbed
After a hospitalization or a major surgery, some patients may not be quite ready to go home, but they no longer need to be a hospital inpatient. To help these patients, Memorial Medical Center offers a Swing Bed Program which is designed to provide additional care in the hospital to help recover from an illness or surgery. This service lets the patient stay in the facility and still receive the daily services and skills of doctors, nurses and therapists.Medicare and certain other insurance providers cover Swing Bed hospitalizations. Medicare Part A covers Swing Bed care at 100% for the first 20 days as long as certain criteria are met. The main criteria that a patient must meet is that they have been hospitalized for at least 3 nights in the last 30 days as an inpatient, and they have a daily need that requires the skilled care of a doctor, nurse, or therapist. Patients that were hospitalized elsewhere can also be transferred to Memorial Medical Center’s Swing Bed services. If you do not have a local physician, our Hospitalist physician can oversee your care during your Swing Bed stay.
Examples of patients who benefit from Swing Bed services include:
Recovery from major surgery, joint replacement procedures.
Recovery from a Stroke or a major accident
Pain Management
Wounds which are not healing or need special care
IV Therapy
Rehabilitation Therapy: Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Respiratory Therapy
Swing Bed is a great alternative to a rehab stay at a nursing home. While receiving Swing Bed care, a patient will receive around the clock supervision by a Registered Nurse with frequent rounds made by their physician. They will also have daily access to any rehab services they need, including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Respiratory Therapy.
All Swing Bed patients will be in private rooms, with digital cable television, telephone, and Wi-Fi.
